How Do I Avoid the Spam Filter?

Every week in our newsletter FWD: Thinking, we give subscribers the opportunity to ask our team of email experts a question. Recently, we’ve heard a few questions about the spam filter, like the below submission: “Our emails are getting lost in people’s spam filters. How do we combat that?” - Heather, FWD: Thinking subscriber So we asked our Director of Deliverability Karen Balle to share her advice. Balle is an expert on the science of how internet service providers (like Gmail and Yahoo!) choose which emails go to spam and which emails reach the inbox. Her advice isn’t to avoid certain words in your subject line. Or to use plain-text emails. It’s much more straightforward.

How to avoid the spam filter: Send content your subscribers want.

Buying your email list or sending your subscribers unwanted content is a great way to go directly to email marketing jail, a.k.a. the spam folder. Instead, send emails your subscribers will open and click and not mark as spam. “The path to good deliverability is sending wanted content to people who have asked for that content to be sent via email,” Balle said. How do you send content your subscribers can't wait to get? Use this proven, 4-point checklist.

Step 1: Email people who opted in to receive messages from you.

Ignore this and your emails will likely take a one-way trip to the spam folder, including messages for subscribers who actually did opt in. This means that buying your email list or manually adding people to your list without their permission is off limits. These tactics will tank your email reputation, which means that internet service providers will be less likely to deliver your emails. (Plus, it’s illegal.)

Step 2: Set expectations on your sign up form.

Your subscribers shouldn’t be surprised by the emails they get from you. If they are, they might mark them as spam. To avoid surprises, clearly explain on your sign up form what type of content you include in your emails and how often you send messages. For example, Ann Handley, Chief Content Officer at Marketing Profs, describes the type of content she sends and how frequently she emails her audience on the landing page for her newsletter TotalAnnarchy.

Step 3. Send valuable emails.

One of the biggest factors in whether or not your emails reach the inbox is positive subscriber engagement. “Good deliverability relies on high subscriber interaction, low complaints, and low bounces,” Balle says. To get your subscribers to consistently engage (open, read, and click!), your email content must be valuable to them. You can add value to your emails by including educational content in them, like blog posts or videos, or even showing subscribers how your product or service will improve their life. If your emails solve subscribers' problems and pain points, they'll open them every time! Related: How to Find Your Customers’ Pain Points

Step 4. Ask your subscribers for ideas.

Not sure what your subscribers will find valuable? Simply ask them! Send a survey in your welcome email or ask them to reply to your welcome email and share what they’d like to learn. You can use these ideas to craft valuable content your subscribers will love to receive. And that can increase your email engagement and your chances of reaching the inbox. Sprout Social Raises $40.5 Million Series-D Fundraising

9 top social media scheduling tools to save time in 2019

The Secret to Writing Addictive Email Content

Top marketers use the same strategy to craft addictive emails. And it’s not beautiful email design or flawless writing. (Although these are both important!) It’s sending valuable emails that your subscribers actually want in their inboxes. Not sure if your emails are addictive? 1. Solve your audience’s problems.

Addictive content is helpful. And the best way to create helpful content is to brainstorm topics that address your audience's needs. Not sure what your audience needs? Figure out their biggest "pain point" — or the problem that keeps them up at night. After all, people don't buy a product or service because of it's flashy features. They ultimately purchase a product because it solves a problem for them. By understanding your subscribers' biggest pain points, you can more effectively promote your product and write convincing marketing copy. Here's how to find your customers' pain points.

2. Keep your subscribers interested.

Addictive content is interesting. To create interesting content, there are a few writing principles to keep in mind. First, choose a tone that works best for your audience. In many cases, taking a conversational tone can improve readability and make your brand more relatable. However, if your audience expects a serious tone because it’s more appropriate for your industry, then keep it formal. Regardless of whether your tone is light-hearted, witty, irreverent, or formal, you should treat your subscribers with respect, says John Corcoran, founder of Smart Business Revolution. "I don’t talk down to people," says Corcoran. "I make it worthwhile to read my emails. I even bury jokes in the ‘P.S.’ and small font at the end just to delight and surprise people who are paying attention.” Second, organize your email content in a way that’s easy for subscribers to read and skim. In today’s fast-paced world, you may only have a few seconds to showcase the value of your email. Structure your content so the most important information is at the top. Additionally, use headlines, subheadlines, and bullet points to break up large chunks of text. (It's so much easier to read on mobile devices. At AWeber, we recommend paragraphs being 2 to 3 sentences max.) To emphasize important parts of your message, try bolding, italicizing, or underlining words and phrases. 3. Craft unique content.

Addictive content is one-of-a-kind. In order to make your content stand out from the rest, try taking a new angle on a topic. This will also help establish you as a thought leader in your niche. For example, many people think that you need a ton of email subscribers to be successful with email marketing. But this isn’t the case! So AWeber's Product Marketing Manager Tom Tate wrote a blog post which explained that a small, engaged email list is better than a huge, disengaged one. This post was extremely successful because it provided a unique angle on an important topic. You can also try new content mediums where your competitors may not have big audiences. If your industry is flooded with blog posts and ebooks, experiment with other forms of communication, like podcasts or video. Not sure what to write in your emails? 4. Keep your promises.

Addictive content is transparent. A big reason why subscribers disengage with an email list is because the emails no longer deliver the value they were expecting. So don't try to get readers to open an email with "click bait" — or a subject line that's enticing, but has very little to do with the content inside the message. The first step to transparency with email: Explain what content you'll send and how often you'll send it on your sign up form. By telling people what they can expect before they sign up to your list, they’ll know what they’re getting into. Plus, you’ll be more likely to attract the right subscribers (which are more likely to engage with your content and purchase your products or services). The second step to transparency: Stick to your promises! If you say you'll send an email once a month, don't bombard your readers with emails every two days. If you say you'll send helpful tips and advice, don't send advertisements. If you do, you'll see your unsubscribes and spam complaints increase almost immediately, which will ultimately hurt your business in the long run. 5. Create connections.

Addictive content builds relationships We enjoy doing business with people we know, like, and trust — as opposed to a large faceless corporation. Humanize your message to increase connection and engagement with your subscriber. The deeper a connection you make with a subscriber, the more likely they are the engage with your emails, buy products from you, and tell their network about your business. One way to do this: Ask questions. The more feedback — good and bad! — you gather from your subscribers, the more likely your business is to succeed. By asking your subscribers questions, may discover a flaw in your product that is stopping them from purchasing. Or maybe they all mention one feature that they absolutely love, and that you can capitalize on in your marketing material. Or maybe they'll tell you their biggest business challenge, which leads to your next great product idea. Or maybe you gather a bunch of fantastic testimonials and case studies that you can promote on your website. Feedback is fuel for your business. Another way: personalization. You don’t need to be pen pals with each of your subscribers. But you should make them feel as if you’re sending them personalized emails. Here’s why: 74% of marketers said that targeted messages and personalization of emails improves customer engagement rates. Try including your subscriber’s name in your message. You can add their first name in the middle or end of the email copy instead of at the beginning, which draws your reader’s eyes downward and keeps them reading. Or you can collect your subscribers’ birth dates on your sign up form. Then send them a celebratory message or a coupon on their birthday. The more you try to connect with your readers, the more successful your email marketing will be. Teamwork makes the dream work: Sprout Social Philanthropy Week 2018

Every year, our team comes together around the winter holidays to support causes near and dear to our hearts. At Sprout, our company values include championing diversity, equity and inclusion, and an important piece of this is using our resources and our privilege to support the communities where we live and work. With our global growth over the past year, we wanted to expand our usual winter initiatives to support a variety of nonprofits, engage our team and give back to a broader range of community efforts.

So this holiday season, we introduced a new tradition to our entire team: Philanthropy Week!

Philanthropy Week, a five-day event where we raised money for more than a dozen nonprofits, actually started in our Seattle office and has been a long-standing tradition for the Simply Measured team that joined Sprout in late 2017. This year, an amazing group of team members based in both our Seattle and Chicago offices re-envisioned this tradition to expand participation across our offices and remote team.

At Sprout, we love a little friendly competition—especially when it’s for a great cause (or 13 great causes, in this case). For Philanthropy Week, every team member had the option to join a team supporting one of 13 different nonprofit organizations, with causes ranging from mental health to immigration and criminal justice reform to increasing opportunities for women of color to pursue careers in STEM.

Throughout the week, we participated in a variety of fundraising activities including a food drive donation day, bake sale, a lunch buy-back, a Sprout swag day and a silent auction—which is where our team’s creativity really emerged. Silent auction items included everything from a week of on-demand LaCroix delivery at your desk, to the creation of a custom theme song for your pet (one of the most popular items!), to a soothing recording of “Good Night Moon” by one of our in-house voiceover artists.

We’re so proud of Team Sprout for investing their time, money and compassion in causes we care about—and I’m thrilled to share that in total, our team raised $21,006 for these incredible organizations!

With a surprise match from Sprout, we’re doubling those donations for a total of more than $42,000, and we’re thrilled to end our 2018 community engagement initiatives with this collaborative, all-company effort. I’d like to extend huge thanks to the team members who led the Philanthropy Week committee, served as team captains and supported our efforts this year—and a special congratulations to our top three teams:

Black Girls Code is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on providing technology education for African-American girls in order to provide them the skills to occupy some of the 1.4 million computing job openings expected to be available in the U.S. by 2020, and to train 1 million girls by 2040.

Google+ will die 4 months sooner thanks to new bug affecting 52 million users


After announcing in October it would be shuttering Google+, its little-loved social media site, Google today announced that, thanks to yet another security flaw, the end would have to come much sooner than originally expected. The site will now shut down completely in April, rather than August, and access to the API network will be cut off in the next 90 days.
